Listen to the song
CHORUS Up in a big balloon,
We’ll fly much higher than birds ever try
And we’ll wave to the sun and the moon.
Looking below us the earth moves as slow as
things usually do in our dreams.
The breeze makes the trees sway both this way and that way,
They’re waving at us so it seems.
chorus…
We keep our eyes open wide over the countryside
looking for old Farmer Brown.
He’s there on the road with his tractor all loaded
With crops for the shops in the town.
Flying, flying, flying so high
As we wave our friends and neighbours ‘Goodbye’.
Flying, flying, flying so high
As we bump our heads on the sky.
Now over the town it’s just like looking down
on a map coloured brown, green and blue.
We rest on the tower of thechurch for an hour
And the weathercock says ‘How d’ye do?’
chorus…
Quick facts about hot air balloons
Who invented the hot air balloon?
The French brothers Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier
Where was the first balloon flight?
In Annonay, France, but there were no passengers on board. Later that same year the first with people took place in Paris.
Who were the first to fly?
The Montgolfier brothers had lifted off the ground in a tethered balloon. The first in free flight were not people but a sheep, a duck and a cockerel. The first humans in free flight were Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, a chemistry and physics teacher, and the Marquis d’Arlandes, a military officer. They flew for 25 minutes from the centre of Paris to the suburbs.
How does it work in a couple of sentences?
Hot air rises above cold air. So if you fill a balloon with air that is hotter than the air outside, it will rise with enough force to lift and carry its basket and passengers.
